Over the years, many visitors to the highlands have been impressed by the outstanding uniqueness of the Highlands of Tarrazu in Southern Costa Rica.
Many people see the pictures available over the internet before buying their ticket to visit this pristine region just outside of the Capital of San Jose.
So, besides a place of finding great coffee, what else is to experience here?
the following are a few things that people have mentioned they love when they visit San Marcos de Tarrazu and the small region of Tarrazu
Yes, mountains. First thing people notice that is of unique beauty is the Mountainous terrain Right after leaving the airport and passing through the cities of San Jose and Cartago, you begin to climb the Talamanca Cordillera all the way up to the Continental divide. Small valleys around surrounded by steep green mountains
b. Winding roads
With high Mountains, you get winding roads, carved in the steep terrains, some of them paved and some not, mostly gravel roads that connect small fincas in the hills to the small towns and coffee processing plants down by the river.
Despite the absolute difficulty of the landscape and steep slopes, coffee farmers had managed over the years to carve narrow roads to bring their trucks to the coffee fields.
The mountains here are high, and during harvest time it can get really cold at night. Winds and Clouds combined to form spectacular sunsets. You can literally touch the clouds
d. Catholic Church
The Catholic church in San Marcos is a architectural gem worth visiting. This is a Traditional Spanish church with 2 towers and a dome with a nice garden well kept. This is for sure a must see landmark at the heart of the coffee fields.
e. Sunrise and sunset
Yes, Sunrises and Sunsets are a unique experience in the coffee highlands of Tarrazu
f. Banana trees and the endless coffee fields
I am sure this not unique to the coffee fields of Tarrazu, but the combined beauty of Banana trees providing shade to the coffee tree is worth mentioning. This is a great mix since banana trees provide shelter and food to migrant birds and other species.
h. Food, fresh tropical fruits
No matter the time of year you arrive in Tarrazu, there are always an endless supply of tropical fruit and vegetables, and the local cuisine is always enjoyable. Most visitors always mention food and local dishes as one of the best of the experience visiting San Marcos.
i. Fresh crisp mountain air
This is something that we take for granted, but air in the highlands is always pure, National Parks covered with pristine tropical forest surround the coffee plantations and that translate into a great mountain air to breath.
j. The smell of coffee flowers
Last, but not least, the coffee flowering season is something out of this world.
for a few weeks in April or May, depending on how soon the rainy season starts, the steep coffee hills are covered with millions of coffee flowers. We call it the coffee snow season since, at its peak the white coffee flowers blanket the fields and it sometimes look like a snow storm has passed.
This is accompanied by the unique smell of the coffee flowers. The scent is hard to describe. You have to be there to experience it.
Thus, now you have more excuses to visit the Tarrazu highlands besides the great coffees you will find in the highland fincas of the Southern Costa Rica Talamanca Sierra.
