Mundo Novo : Origins of the "New World" coffee varietal

Mundo Novo coffee varietal is among the most popular cultivars in the coffee industry, especially in Brazil. Vast coffee plantations are covered by the "New World" Varietal. Additionally, Mundo Novo genetics are part of the also popular Catuai cultivar which is very popular in my country of origin Costa Rica.

Because of the above, today's research have been dedicated to uncover the history of the Mundo Novo coffee variety.

Name Origin:

Mundo Novo is in the Portuguese language and traslates into English as "New World". As per Research below, it was originally baptized by Scientists at the Instituto Agronomico of Campinas, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil in the first part of the 20th century. Its original name was "Sumatra de Mundo Novo" or Sumatra of the New World.

Genetics of the coffee plant:

According to Alcides Carvalho, prominent Brazilian coffee scientist, the Mundo Novo coffee varietal was found in Urupês (State of Sao Paulo, Brazil) and it is a natural mutation between Bourbon Vermelho ( Red Bourbon) and Sumatra, both coffea arabica lines.
Urupes is a small agricultural town about 423 km (262.84 miles) north west of the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Characteristics of the Plant:

Mundo Novo coffe plants are characterized by being tall trees, with high yield, good vegetative vigor,
root system well developed, wide adaptability; fruits are red, harvest mature in 224 days under the conditions of
Campinas in the State of Sao Paulo, The new leaves are green or bronze. It presents susceptibility to
rust agent and excellent quality in the drink (Fazuoli, 1986).

Mundo Novo in Today's Coffee industry:

As described in the research below, the Mundo Novo coffee varietal has been key in developing the coffee industry. Nowadays, around 35% of Brazilian coffee production come from Mundo Novo cultivars. Additionally, this variety's genetics are present in hybrids such as Catuai, which accounts for 60% of Arabica coffee production in Brazil today. Catuai trees arealso widely present in Countries like Colombia and Costa Rica.

Conclusion:

The Sumatra of the New World Coffee varietal has proven to be the key to huge coffee developments in countries such as Brazil and Costa Rica. Because of Mundo Novo, many coffee farmers have been able to meet production demands and bring income to local economies that desperately need it. Most coffee cups served in industrialized countries such as USA and Europe carry the genetic characteristics from the Mundo Novo plant and it is because of coffee scientists such as Mr. Alcides Carvalho that the world coffee trade has developed in such a gigantic operation.

Two important Varietals were found, partially made by nature, of Bourbon Yellow and the Mundo Novo.
Regarding "Bourbon Amarelo" or Bourbon Yellow, it was found in 1930 in Pederneiras, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. This variety must have been originated by the natural mutation between Bourbon Vermelho ( Bourbon Red) and Yellow of Botucatu (CARVALHO et al., 1957). Regarding Mundo Novo, in 1943, it was found in Urupês (State of Sao Paulo), and it is a hybridization between Bourbon Vermelho ( Red Bourbon) and Sumatra (CARVALHO et aI., 1952).
The Mundo Novo Coffee began to be studied in 1943 with the establishment of several
experiments. The selection between and within progenies was very effective, and obtained plants particularly productive, of good yield, such as LP 388-17, LCMP 376-4, LCP 501, LCP
502, LCP 515, LCP 513 e LCP 382-14, after analizing thousands of individual plants (FAZUOLI, Documentos, IAC, Campinas, 34, 2007 6 1977).

These strains, as well as productive, are vigorous and adapted to various ecological regions in Brazil. Being productive, of course, they need to be handled well to show their potential production. Strains of the Mundo Novo, with slightly larger seeds, were called Acaia,
The Catuaí variety, a dwarf coffee plant, combines rusticity
and production of the Mundo Novo variety and the reduced size of the Caturra Varietal (Carvalho and MONACO, 1972b), being the best strains the ones with the following prefixes: LCP 474 prefixes, LCP 474-4, 474-7 and LCP LCP 474-19.

Coffea Arabica Mundo Novo
They selected the first mother plants of this variety, known as Sumatra of Mundo Novo ( or the Sumatra of the New World" in the São Paulo municipality of Urupês in 1943. At that time, eighteen of these plants received
prefixes P 374 to P 391. Its origin is attributed to a recombination resulting from natural cross between
the Coffea arabica cultivars var. Sumatra and Coffea. arabica var. Bourbon Red (Carvalho et al., 1952).

The experiments were performed from 1943 to 1952, selecting several mother plants and subsequently new lines from
progenies and within experimental stations in different parts of the State of Sao Paulo, yielding productive strains,
vigorous, with good performance and adapted to the various ecological regions of Brazil, such as
LCP 388-17 prefixes; LCP 379-19; LCMP 376-4; LCP 382-14 and 388-6 LCMP.

In turn, 'Mundo Novo ' was found in 1943 in Urupês
(State of Sao Paulo ) , derived from the natural crossing between
'Red Bourbon ' with ' Sumatra ' .

the Mundo Novo cultivars became available from 1952.

In 1943, the first selections were made of a cultivar of Coffea arabica
called Mundo Novo in the city of Urupês- State of Sao Paulo which attracted much interest
for its high production, hardiness and good product quality (CARVALHO &
Fazuoli, 1993).
The cultivar Mundo Novo, originated from natural crossing between
Red Bourbon and the Sumatra variety (Carvalho et al., 1952), is today
one of Coffea arabica cultivars most commonly used by producers in the country (Brazil) with 35% of
domestic production, and also used in intra or interspecific hybridization.

For example the Cultivar
Catuaí comes from the artificial hybridization between cultivars Mundo Novo and Caturra.
It was obtained in order to transfer the CTCT character of the Caturra, which gives low size,
to the Mundo Novo cultivar which features high size (CARVALHO & MONACO, 1972).
Currently the Catuaí represents 60% of Arabica coffee production in Brazil (Pro-
Coffee - Integrated Support Programme Cafeicultura) demonstrating that the reduction in size
of the coffee plants was a milestone for the national coffee production due to lower costs
production (Aguiar et al., 2004).
